I graduated from the University of California, Davis with a degree
in History and I earned my social studies teaching credential at California
State University East Bay. I have taught at Castro Valley High School
since 2005.
For me, history is much more than memorizing facts and dates. It is
a tool that we use to understand the development of our world--both
good and bad. By sharpening our critical thinking skills, it prepares
us to be active and engaged citizens ready to tackle social ills and
world conflict.
When I'm not teaching, I like to read, pwn n00bs on Xbox Live and drive
around Hayward in my scraper.
The most important way to judge a student's academic success is to
ask whether or not they are learning everyday, enjoying school and preparing
for a happy adulthood. No grown-up is every judged by their high school
GPA. We are judged by the measure of our intellect and the quality of
our character.
That said, grade reports are always available upon request.
PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT
It is rarely easy for teenagers to juggle six classes, homework,
afterschool activities, a social life and everything else thrown at
them. Although some young people are very self-motivated, most high
schoolers thrive when provided some structure:
-Homework checks
-Organization checks (backpacks, notebooks, study area)
-Curfew (including weekends)
-Afterschool check-in
-Bedtime (7-8.5 hours of sleep)
Young learners need lots of encouragement and support from their
families. The healthier things are at a home, the easier they can
concentrate on learning at school.
There's no easy 1-2-3 step to developing a good bond and strong communication
with your child, but if you need help please don't hesitate to ask
me or one of our school's very talented counselors.
ABSENCES
For brief absences, students can make-up their lessons at lunch or
afterschool by appointment. For extended absences, please phone the
school to arrange assignments for pick-up.
Please inform CVHS of your student's absence within 24 hours by calling
(510) 537-5910. Thank you!
